As parents, we spend so much time thinking about how to help our babies sleep well, but making sure they sleep safely is just as important. With so much conflicting advice online, it can be hard to know what’s truly recommended. Below, I’ll break down the essentials of safe sleep so you can feel confident your baby’s sleep space is as safe as possible.

It’s easy to remember the ABC’s of Safe Sleep — Alone, on their Back, in a Crib.
These three rules are the foundation of safe sleep and play a crucial role in reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related dangers. Understanding SIDS can help explain why these guidelines matter. SIDS refers to the sudden and unexplained death of an otherwise healthy baby during sleep, within the first year of life. While the exact cause is still unknown, research shows that following safe sleep practices greatly lowers the risk.
In addition to a safe sleep setup, these habits have been shown to further reduce the risk of SIDS:
☁ Feed human milk whenever possible
☁ Offer a pacifier at sleep times
☁ Avoid smoke exposure
☁ Prevent overheating
☁ Attend regular check-ups
Creating a safe sleep environment is one of the most effective ways to reduce risks and give your baby the safest sleep possible each night. Focus on keeping your baby’s sleep space simple, uncluttered, and set up to support safe sleep. Here are a few key ways to do that:
☁ Use a firm mattress with a fitted sheet
☁ Room-share without bed-sharing for the first six months
☁ Maintain a comfortable room temperature
☁ Use a sleep sack instead of blankets
Safe Sleep While Traveling
It’s inevitable that your baby will fall asleep during travel — the soothing motion of the car makes it almost impossible not to. Still, safe sleep rules apply to every situation, whether you’re at home or on the go. Keep these tips in mind to help reduce risks:
☁ Supervise naps whenever possible.
☁ Use a portable crib or playpen that meets current safety standards
☁ Consider purchasing or renting a SlumberPod. A breathable, portable blackout sleep tent that’s safety tested and approved for use over playpens.
☁ Car seats are for travel, not sleep. If your baby falls asleep in the car, transfer them to a safe, flat sleep surface once you arrive.
