It’s 5:09am, and your baby is wide awake, again. If you’re wondering why mornings have to start before sunrise, you’re not alone. Early morning wakings are one of the most common (and frustrating) sleep challenges parents face. When babies don’t get the rest their bodies need, it often shows in their mood and routines. They may be more irritable, feed less efficiently, and find it harder to settle for naps throughout the day. The good news is, there are gentle yet effective ways to correct early morning wakings and get your little one sleeping past sunrise.

What Are Early Morning Wakings?

Anytime your little one wakes up for the day before 6am is what we call an early morning waking. Your baby’s circadian rhythm is like their internal clock, it tells their body when it’s time to sleep and when it’s time to wake up. Just like you feel tired at night and alert during the day, your baby’s body is learning those same patterns. Since these sleep and wake patterns are influenced by light and dark cycles, babies naturally wake for the day between 6 and 7am.

Why Are They Happening?

It’s important to remember that baby sleep is never perfect, but if these early wakings are happening every day for a week, then it’s time to take a closer look at why this might be happening. Common causes include:

A sleep environment that’s not quite optimized

Not receiving enough calories during the day

Daytime schedule challenges

Sleep associations

.

How Can I Fix Them?

Before you can fix early wakings, it helps to understand what’s behind them. Start with tracking your little ones eating and sleeping routine for about a week. Apps like Huckleberry or Baby Tracker make it easy to log naps, feeds, and wake times all in one place. Seeing it written down often reveals patterns contributing to those early starts that you might not notice day to day. With that insight, you can begin making small adjustments that lead to more restful mornings.

1. Sleep Environment

Creating the right sleep environment can make a big difference in preventing early morning wake-ups. Babies are highly sensitive to their surroundings, and even small details can affect the quality of their rest. Blackout curtains, constant white noise, and maintaining a temperature between 68–72°F help support longer, more restful sleep.

2. Feeding Schedule

Establish a strong, consistent daytime feeding schedule during the day, so you can feel confident that those early wakes aren’t due to hunger. Keeping feeds regular helps ensure they’re getting enough calories during the day. Following an EAT, PLAY, SLEEP routine will help keep baby from getting drowsy or falling asleep during feeds, ensuring they have a good, full feed.

3. Scheduling Considerations

Finding the right balance between night sleep and daytime naps can be tricky. Babies need plenty of rest, but knowing how much is enough, or too much can be challenging. If your baby wakes happy and content, they’ve likely had enough night sleep. If they wake tired or fussy, they may still need more rest. Aim for 11-12 hours of nighttime sleep and adjust naps based on your baby’s age and needs.

4. Sleep Associations

Sleep associations are the habits your baby relies on to fall asleep, for example being rocked or fed. While comforting, these cues can lead your baby to expect the same help each time they wake, including early mornings. Encourage independent sleep by keeping your baby awake during their bedtime routine and placing them in their crib fully awake. This helps them practice falling asleep on their own, so when they wake at 4 or 5 a.m., they can recognize their surroundings, self-soothe, and drift back to sleep.

Every baby is different, and what works for one child may take a little longer for another. Improving early morning wake-ups takes time and consistency. Try making one change at a time, because if you adjust too many things at once, you won’t know whats working. Once you introduce a change, give it at least 4–5 days before deciding whether it’s working. I know that can feel like forever when mornings start early, but small, steady adjustments often lead to the biggest progress. Remember, even minor tweaks can have a meaningful impact on your baby’s sleep over time.
